PUPILS at a Co Armagh grammar school have been given a unique insight into the lives of several high profile figures at an event aimed at helping them "understand the power within themselves".

Year 13 and 14 pupils from St Ronan's College in Lurgan heard from speakers including Dawson Stelfox, the first person from Ireland to climb Mount Everest Dan Lowes, a former Red Arrows pilot and broadcaster Stephen Nolan.

The event, 'The Power of You', which was held at the Seagoe Hotel in Portadown, is part of ambitious plans by the school to help support the "delivery of our dreams for the young people of Lurgan".

Other guest speakers included Dr Frances Weldon, Almac STEM manager, BBC Broadcaster and kidney transplant recipient Stephen Watson and past pupil and actress Stephanie McConville.

Principal Fiona Kane said pupils were given "fascinating insights as to how they can achieve their dreams if they understand the power within themselves".

Staff and pupils were joined by representatives from the Department of Education, Education Authority, board of governors and local primary school principals, as well as representatives from local businesses.

"Pupils at the heart of our school and school at the heart of our community, remains a key focus for the college," Ms Kane said.

"With this wonderful event and the launch of the St Ronan's College Foundation today - ambitious plans are being laid down to support the delivery of our dreams for the young people of Lurgan."
