A stretch of one of Northern Ireland's busiest routes is to be regularly closed for almost a month for resurfacing.

A £375,000 road improvement scheme on the A24 Carryduff Road in Co Down will see part of the road shut close to Temple.

The work will take place from Creevytenant Road to Carricknaveagh Road, which is located on the main road between Belfast and Newcastle.

A spokesperson for the Department for Infrastructure said "to facilitate the works it will be necessary to implement weekday road closures for the duration of the works" from September 30 until October 22 between 9am and 4.30pm.

A full road closure will also be in place on October 2 from 7am until 6pm on October 3.

A diversionary route will be in place using the A21 Ballynahinch Road/A21 Saintfield Road and the B6 Saintfield Road/B6 Lisburn Road and vice versa with local access for residents and emergency services.

Infrastructure minister Nichola Mallon said: "This significant investment will greatly improve the strength and surface quality of this section of the road network to the benefit of local residents and those using this transport corridor.

"I would like to thank the public and local residents in advance for their cooperation and ask that they comply with all temporary traffic restrictions while these much needed works are completed."
