A comedy which stars Belfast actor Ciaran Hinds has begun filming in Dublin.

The Dry, an eight-part series which has been commissioned by BritBox UK, promises to celebrate "the joyful chaos and dark absurdities of family life in a series that is all about recovery".

The comedy tells the story of Shiv Sheridan who returns to Dublin after years of partying in London.

Despite being sober and full of good intentions, being back with her family makes staying on 'the dry' much harder than she expected.

Written by Nancy Harris and directed by Paddy Breathnach, the comedy also stars Róisín Gallagher, Pom Boyd, Siobhán Cullen and Adam Richardson.

Element Pictures, which is producing The Dry in association with Screen Ireland and ITV Studios, in partnership with RTÉ. said "In The Dry, Nancy Harris has created an irreverent, hilarious, and deeply moving story of addiction, recovery and fractured family relationships.

"We are thrilled to be working with Nancy, the inimitable Paddy Breathnach and our massively talented Irish cast and crew to bring the chaotic world of the Sheridan family to the BritBox audience".

The Dry will premiere on BritBox UK next year.
