A DOCUMENTARY about the Ballymurphy Massacre is to be show on RTE One tonight.

`Massacre At Ballymurphy' by director Callum Macrae investigates, in forensic detail, a series of killings by the British Army in the Ballymurphy area of west Belfast in August 1971.

British soldiers shot and killed 10 people, including a mother-of-eight and a Catholic priest.

Earlier this year, a coroner found that all those killed were "entirely innocent" leading to emotional scenes from their families who had fought for decades for justice.

Now, a documentary made about the massacre is to be shown on RTE.

Mr Macrae said: "Next month is the fiftieth anniversary of this shocking crime, and RTE's decision to broadcast the film in a prime-time shot is a significant contribution to the families campaign for justice.

"It will, I hope, put additional pressure on the British government to take serious steps to give real justice for the families whose loved ones were unlawfully killed by the British army," he said.

The director said the British government's response had been "shamefully inadequate".

"Boris Johnson added insult to injury when he apologised for the way the investigations were handled, but entirely failed to apologise for the fact that the British army killed their loved ones," he said.

"That he then went on, in almost the same breath, to pledge to introduce legislation to protect British military veterans from what he called `unfair, vexatious litigation, compounds the injury".

`Massacre At Ballymurphy' will be shown on RTE One tonight at 9.35pm.
