A security alert in the Castle Street area of Belfast city centre was a hoax, police have confirmed.

The alert followed a report that a device had been left in the vicinity but nothing was found.

Castle Street was cordoned off, and members of the public asked to avoid the area.

Police said there had been a telephone warning that a device had been left but "nothing was found during the searches and the incident is being treated as a hoax".

“Cordons have now been lifted, and I am keen to thank all those inconvenienced for their patience as we worked to ensure the area was safe.”
