A ferry sailing into Belfast was accompanied by Coast Guard teams and tug boats last night after a fire broke out on the ship.

The Stena Line sailing from Cairnryan to Belfast was delayed after a fire broke out in the engine room at around 9pm.

The ship had been due to arrive in Belfast at around 9.45pm and lifeboats and Coast Guard rescue boats were called to assist it as it made its way through Belfast Lough.

Passengers had been advised to gather in designated areas of the Superfast VIII vessel during the emergency.

Stena Line said last night the fire had been extinguished. There were no reports of injuries among crew or passengers.
