A north Belfast councillor has condemned a local bonfire that was adorned with a profane message attacking the Irish News.

The pyre at Shore Crescent was pictured yesterday, hours ahead of being torched, with four placards scrawled with the words 'F*** the Irish News'.

Built close to a children's play area on the Shore Road, the pallet-laden structure was due to be lit last night ahead of today's Twelfth of July celebrations.

Pictures of the site in the days leading up to the Eleventh Night event show the core of the bonfire to consist of rubber tyres which release harmful toxic fumes when burned.

North Belfast SDLP councillor Paul McCusker said the message on the Shore Crescent bonfire was "totally inappropriate".

"I don't think there is any place for such a message at what is supposed to be a celebration event," he said.

"It's important that we call such activity out. There should be no slogans, or any other signs or flags attacking others if this is about celebrating culture."
