FORMER Co Donegal GAA player Joe Winston 'Dodo' has died following a short illness at the age of 77.

A member of the breakthrough Donegal team which won two Ulster championships in the early 1970s, he passed away at Letterkenny University Hospital on Monday.

Mr Winston contributed five points in the 1971 Ulster final to help Donegal win its first ever provincial championship.

The team included many other players who went on to become household names in Ulster GAA, including Brian McEniff and Seamus Bonner.

He also tasted success following his playing career and was part of the management team of PJ McGowan when Donegal won its first ever All Ireland Under-21 Championship in 1987.

A life-long stalwart with his St Eunan’s Letterkenny home club, he served as player and later manager.

A spokesman for St Eunan's said Mr Winston was one of the club's greatest ever players.

Requiem Mass will be held at St Eunan’s Cathedral tomorrow with burial afterwards at Conwal Cemetery.
