WORK is about to start on a skate park in Co Antrim, which will be one of the biggest in Ireland and the UK.

The V36 Urban Sports Park in Newtownabbey should be completed by the end of this year.

It is being built on a site beside the Valley Leisure Centre after £750,000 of European funding was approved in April.

Mayor of Antrim and Newtownabbey Borough Council, Councillor Billy Webb said it was "great news for the borough".

"Urban sports have really taken off and we are delighted to be working in partnership with the Peace IV Programme, to provide one of the biggest urban sports parks in the UK," he said.

Deputy Mayor and chair of the Antrim and Newtownabbey Peace IV Partnership, Councillor Stephen Ross said: “It is fantastic to now be at a stage where we are seeing projects come to life and this project will have a real impact by providing a new, accessible, shared space for our borough.”

Match-funding is being provided by The Executive Office and the Department of Rural and Community Development, Ireland.
