Strabane town centre is to benefit from a £50,000 environmental regeneration scheme.

The upgrade will focus on Castle Street and Abercorn Square and follows consultation with local businesses.

Derry City and Strabane District Council says the scheme will improve the character of the area and support businesses recovering from Covid-19 lockdowns.

Mayor Graham Warke said it had been "a very challenging time for traders" and he welcomed the funding announcement.

Enhancements will include new seating and planting and work is due to be completed in August. The work will tie in with a planned programme of entertainment including dancers and buskers who will be on the streets from this weekend.

Derry City and Strabane District Council will carry out the upgrade with support from the Department for Communities  through its Covid-19 Recovery Revitalisation Programme.

Minister for Communities Deirdre Hargey said increased footfall will bring life back to the high street while Michael Kelly, Vice Chair of the Strabane BID Board, said the investment " will create a much more inviting space" in Strabane town centre.
