NO further coronavirus deaths were reported last night in Northern Ireland, but another 178 new positive cases were confirmed.

The death toll from the virus, recorded by the Department of Health, remains at 2,155.

There have been 906 cases of coronavirus recorded in the north over the past seven days - an increase of 278 on the previous week.

There were 16 Covid-19 inpatients in hospital last night, but none were in intensive care.

Bed occupancy in hospitals was 100 per cent and there are three active outbreaks in care homes.

A total of 1,922,617 vaccines have been administered in Northern Ireland, including 1,132,546 first doses.

The SSE Arena vaccination centre in Belfast marked a significant milestone yesterday when the 200,000th vaccine was administered.

It comes as figures from the Northern Ireland Statistics and Research Agency (Nisra) yesterday revealed that there were two Covid-19 linked deaths in the north in the latest week subjected to statistical analysis.

The fatalities, in the week June 5-11, took the total number of coronavirus-related deaths recorded by the agency to 2,979.

The Nisra data provides a broader picture of the impact of Covid-19 than the death toll reported by Stormont's Department of Health.

The department's statistics focus primarily on hospital deaths and only include people who have tested positive for the virus.

Nisra obtains its data from death certificates on which Covid-19 is recorded as a factor by a medical professional, regardless of where the death took place or whether the patient tested positive.

Of the 2,979 deaths recorded by Nisra by June 11, 1,972 (66 per cent) occurred in hospitals, 776 (26 per cent) in care homes, 14 (0.5 per cent) in hospices and 217 (7 per cent) at residential addresses or other locations.

Nisra reported that up to June 11, the deaths of 1,013 care home residents were linked to Covid-19.
