There have been calls for the new Lagan Gateway bridge in south Belfast to be named in memory of teenager Noah Donohoe.

Belfast City Council has asked members of the public to name the new 83 metre-long pedestrian and cycle bridge, which is due to open this summer.

The bridge is one of the key elements of the £5.2 million Lagan Gateway project.

Members of the public are being asked for name suggestions, which can be submitted until May 30 via yoursay.belfastcity.gov.uk.

A shortlist of four names will then be compiled before a public vote will take place to decide the winner.

So far, just under 1,100 name suggestions have been made however many of them are linked to teenager, Noah Donohoe, who died last year.

The St Malachy’s College pupil disappeared after leaving his home in the Ormeau Road area of south Belfast on his bike on Sunday June 21.

The 14-year-old was making his way to Cave Hill Country Park to meet friends but never arrived.

Six days later, the young man's remains were found in a storm drain off the Shore Road on June 27.

Some of the bridge name suggestions linked to the teenager include `Noah's Bridge', `Noah's Arc of Hope' and `The Noah Donohoe Bridge'.

Niamh Donohoe, Noah's aunt, said the family are "so touched by the overwhelming support" for the bridge to be named in the teenager's honour.

"Fiona and Noah loved to walk the tow path and it's such a tranquil and beautiful spot," she said.

"It would be another fitting tribute to the most unassuming little boy and as Noah's family we would be so proud if it came to fruition.

"Noah will always be a beacon of hope for us regardless".
