POLICE have urged the public to be vigilant following two security alerts in Derry.

Both decks of the city's Craigavon Bridge were closed last night following the discovery of a suspicious object which was later found to be an elaborate hoax. The bridge was re-opened in time for morning rush hour traffic.

Army technical officers also attended the Skeoge Road area of the city after a suspicious object was found. The road was later re-opened after the device was again found to be an elaborate hoax.

PSNI inspector Michael Swanson appealed for information about both.

"I am keen to thank everyone affected and inconvenienced, in both instances, for their patience as we worked to make the area safe," he said.

"I am also asking members of the public to be vigilant. If you should come across any object that looks suspicious, please don't touch it. Instead, contact us immediately on 999."
