Northern Ireland's first Youth Assembly has opened for applications.

The assembly will be made up of 90 young people aged between 13 and 17 who will put forward their ideas about how the north should be governed.

It aims to influence decisions taken by MLAs at Stormont.

Members will be appointed for two years and meet twice year in Parliament Buildings chaired by assembly Speaker Alex Maskey, with the first meeting to be held in June.

They will also meet more regularly in scrutiny committees and take part in training sessions.

Applications to the youth assembly will be anonymised. Three teenagers will be chosen at random from each of the north's 18 constituencies, plus 36 more from across the north.

Mr Maskey has urged young people to apply.

"Too often young people have felt that they do not have influence on the laws and programmes that directly affect them," he said.

"The Youth Assembly aims to change this - and I know that our society will be better for their involvement."
