Man (33) arrested over attempted murder of off-duty PSNI officer in Co Derry in 2015

A 33-year-old man has been arrested in the Republic over the attempted murder of an off-duty PSNI officer in Eglinton, Co Derry, six years ago.

The man was arrested under a European Arrest Warrant by gardaí yesterday morning.

He was wanted in Northern Ireland after a bomb was placed under the car of an off-duty PSNI officer in Eglinton on June 18 2015.

The man will appear before Derry Magistrates Court via video link from Musgrave PSNI station in Belfast today.

PSNI Detective Chief Inspector John Caldwell said: "I would like to thank An Garda Síochána colleagues for their help in arresting the man by virtue of a European Arrest Warrant on suspicion of attempting to murder a police officer and possession of explosives with intent to endanger life".

Police are still investigating the attempted bombing.
