A Sinn Féin councillor has removed messages about Prince Philip from social media.

James McKeown, who represents the party on Mid and East Antrim council, made the comments on his Facebook page at the weekend.

One was a reference to Queen Elizabeth's consort "coming back the same person after dying saying he's 55 and still going strong" - a reference to Rangers Football Club's recent 55th league title win which has appeared elsewhere on the networking site.

Another post branded the 99-year-old a "racist".

The messages were removed and Mr McKeown made no comment yesterday.

DUP East Antrim MP Sammy Wilson had criticised them on Twitter.

"Quite disgusting comments from @sinnfeinireland councillor James McKeown following the death of HRH The Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh," he wrote.

"The respect agenda evaporating by the day. Will action be taken?"
