A man has died following a road crash near Moira, bringing to six the number of motorcyclists killed on the north's roads so far this year.

The collision involving the bike and a telehandler vehicle happened on the Lany Road at around 3.30pm on Saturday.

The victim had not yet been named last night.

Police appealed for information, urging anyone in the area at the time and who may have dashcam footage to contact them.

The crash came just two days after the death of 66-year-old motorcyclist Alisdair Wallace in Newtownards.

The popular musician, who played the trumpet at seasonal pantos at Belfast's Grand Opera House for many years, had been the fifth motorcyclist to lose his life this year.

So far this year there have been 15 road fatalities - six motorcyclists, five drivers of other vehicles, one passenger, and three pedestrians.

PSNI statistics show there were eight motorcycle deaths in the whole of 2020, and just three in 2019.

Roads expert Wesley Johnson urged bikers to take care while out on the roads in the coming weeks and summer months and also for other road users to be aware of their presence.

"Unbelievable news that a sixth motorcyclist has now been killed on Northern Ireland's roads over the past six weeks," he tweeted.

"Motorcyclists are the road users most likely to be killed on our roads. Please #bikesafe and take the time to look for bikes."

Meanwhile, police in Derry have appealed for information following a report of a serious collision involving a car and two teenage girls.

A spokesman said officers attended Lowry’s Lane, just off the Glen Road and close to the entrance Pairc Colmcille GAA pitch, shortly after midnight on Saturday.

"A 15-year-old girl and a 16-year-old girl who were sitting on the footpath at the time of the incident were taken to hospital for treatment for their injuries, which are not believed to be serious."

Constable Steven Toner said no arrests have been made but "police are actively seeking to identify the driver of this vehicle".

“We are appealing for witnesses to the collision or anyone who recalls seeing a white vehicle with a male driver prior to the collision,to get in touch as soon as possible to assist the investigation.

“In particular, we are appealing for information about a white vehicle, make and model unknown, that was present in the area at the time, and had a learner’s ‘L’ plate on the rear window."
