There were 107 new positive tests in the past 24 hours after 2,048 people were tested.

In hospitals, 112 patients have tested postiive for the virus. Of these, 17 are in intensive care and nine are on ventilators.

Bed occupancy in the north's hospitals is at 98 per cent. Three hospitals are operating over capacity; the Royal Victoria Hosptial in Belfast, Enniskillen's South West Acute Hospital and the Ulster Hospital in Dundonald.

Coronavirus clusters are present in six care homes, one more than was recorded yesterday.

To date, 918,459 vaccines have been administered in the north, 765,005 of which were first doses and 153,454 were second doses.

Today's figures were released after the Northern Ireland Statistics and Research Agency (Nisra) confirmed in its weekly update that its recorded death toll had reached 2,908.

The Nisra data provides a broader picture of the impact of Covid-19 than the death toll reported by Stormont’s Department of Health.

The department’s statistics focus primarily on hospital deaths and only include people who have tested positive for the virus.

Nisra obtains its data from death certificates on which Covid-19 is recorded as a factor by a medical professional, regardless of where the death took place or whether the patient tested positive.

The statistics agency reports its Covid-19 data with a week lag.

The department’s death toll stood at 2,108 on March 26.

Meanwhile, in the Republic there have been a further eight deaths and 591 new cases.
