POLICE have come under petrol bomb and stone attack in Derry for a second night in a row.

PSNI reinforcements had to be called to Tullyally on Tuesday after a Land Rover was disabled.

Police said Waterside neighbourhood officers were on patrol in the area when a petrol bomb was thrown striking the Land Rover which had to be recovered. Further petrol bombs and missiles were thrown and a small fire was lit on the roadway.

The incident followed similar attacks in the adjacent Currynierin area on Monday night.

Chief Inspector Bob Blemmings said: “Young people engaging in disorder are risking not only their own safety but they also face the possibility of a criminal conviction.

“These reckless attacks are harming the local community and we would appeal for parents and guardians to make sure their children are not getting drawn into activity that will bring them to the attention of the police.”

He said police would continue to work with local representatives and partner agencies to ensure residents could "live in peace".

Sinn Féin councillor for the area, Christopher Jackson said the attacks were senseless.

“These attacks merely put extra pressure on emergency services and must stop,” Mr Jackson said.

SDLP councillor Martin Reilly said the attacks diverted police and fire crews away from other duties and emergencies and put lives at risk.

“There is no call for this type of reckless behaviour,” Mr Reilly said.
