A man in his twenties has been killed in a road crash involving three cars which shut down the M1 motorway.

The crash occurred on the westbound carriageway close to the Moira off-slip at about 4.45am.

The victim was the driver of one of the vehicles.

Two other people who were travelling in the same car were taken to hospital for treatment to injuries that are not believed to be life-threatening.

It is understood the driver of the third vehicle was not injured.

A section of the motorway, between Junction 9 at Moira and Junction 10 Lough Road, was closed in both directions for a time following the fatal crash.

Police have appealed for witnesses or anyone with dash-cam footage to contact them on 101.

Meanwhile, police last night closed several roads in the Lisburn area "to facilitate enquiries by officers investigating a fatal road collision" on the Moira Road in Lisburn on October 18 last year.

Between Halftown Road and Cross Lane were closed for a time as well as between Gravehill Road and Church Lane.

The Moira Road was also closed for a time.
