NORTHERN Ireland’s oldest woman is recovering after undergoing hip surgery aged 106.

Madge Martin, who lives in Newry, required the emergency surgery after fracturing her hip when she fell at home.

It comes just weeks before she is due to celebrate her 107th birthday.

In a post on Facebook, the Southern Health and Social Care Trust said the treatment was carried out in Craigavon Area Hospital.

A photograph was also shared of Ms Martin, pictured alongside Bruce Watson, consultant orthopaedic surgeon, on the third day after her hip fracture was fixed.

Dr Watson said Ms Martin is recovering and they hope she "returns home soon".

"It was a privilege to fix the hip fracture for this wonderful lady and get her back on her feet in preparation for her 107th birthday on 17th April," he said.

"Our team in Craigavon Area Hospital are working hard to ensure Madge makes a full recovery and returns home soon."

Ms Martin, who was born in 1914, is originally from Kinsale, Co Cork, but lives with her son John in Newry.
