Racist graffiti which appeared in east Belfast early yesterday has been branded "repellent".

Police received a report of the offensive slogans, which had been daubed on a wall and a pillar in the Moat Park area of Dundonald, at around 8am.

A PSNI spokesman, who appealed for information, said enquiries into the criminal damage were "continuing" adding that at this stage, the incident is being treated as a "hate crime".

Alliance councillor Sharon Lowry said she was "absolutely disgusted" by the graffiti.

"Dundonald is a welcoming area and I am absolutely disgusted at the appearance of this graffiti, which is not representative of this area at all,” she said.

"I condemn those who have scrawled these repellent messages. When it comes to the poison of racism, we must all unite and face it down. I cannot grasp the mindset of those who deem it acceptable to even have those views, never mind graffiti them in public".

She added: "The Council is working to remove this urgently and I call on anyone with any information to give it to police immediately".
