TWENTY solicitor firms across Northern Ireland are waiving their will-writing fees in return for a donation to charity.

It is part of the annual 'Make a Will Month' campaign by the Northern Ireland Hospice and Children’s Hospice.

More than 80 per cent of people in the north have not made a will, but the hospice is aiming to raise awareness of its importance - and the benefits to the charity when a legacy gift is made.

Cathy Warnock, from Edward & Co Solicitors in Belfast, said: "We are delighted to support NI Hospice, a charity close to many people’s hearts during 'Make a Will Month'.

"During the month of March, if clients instruct us in relation to a straightforward will, we will waive our usual fees and encourage them to make a donation to the hospice instead."

Mary McCall, director at NI Hospice, said: "Make a Will Month is an ideal opportunity to make or update your existing will for free, whilst also helping to safeguard the future of Northern Ireland Hospice services.

"Unfortunately, NI Hospice only receives 30 per cent government funding and we rely heavily on donations from the local community to sustain our vital care services.

"The Covid-19 pandemic has made us acutely aware that variable income, from community fundraising and events, cannot always be relied on.

"Gifts in wills provide a level of certainty for hospice and make up an essential portion of our voluntary income. Without these generous gifts, we simply couldn't continue to care for local people who need it most."
