A sinister loyalist sign depicting an armed man and threatening violence is designed to intimidate, it has been claimed.

The poster, which was put up in Newbuildings, near Derry city, shows a masked man carrying an assault rifle.

It includes a map of Britain and the north overlaid with a union flag and carries the message: "Loyalist Newbuildings - Our forefathers fought for our freedom and rights. No border in the sea or we will continue the fight."

They are the latest in a series of threatening posters and graffiti to appear across the north amid tensions over the Northern Ireland Protocol.

In recent days posters depicting armed and masked men have also been put up in parts of Co Down and Tyrone.

SDLP assembly member Mark H Durkan was last night critical of the posters.

"They are designed to mark territory and intimidate and while these posters have a new message this practice is not a new one," he said.

He said the threatening signs may not have the desired outcome.

"It's not going to be particularly effective in terms of the people putting them up getting what they want," he said.

He added that the signs are designed to be "divisive".

"These posters are almost about telling people in these areas what they are expected to think," he said.

"It's about exerting control on communities as much as anything else and that's just deplorable."

A PSNI spokesman said last night they were "aware of reports of posters being erected in a number of locations".

"Whilst understanding there have been a number of posters highlighting dissatisfaction with current EU exit arrangements, posters showing armed gunmen aren’t acceptable in any community and, therefore, we are working with local communities to have them removed as quickly as possible."
