Police have named the victim of a fatal assault in Co Down as 25-year-old Denis Shearer from Bangor.

Mr Shearer was assaulted at an address on Fernmore Road in Bangor on February 28. He died in hospital on Tuesday.

A 39-year-old male and a 38-year-old female have been charged in relation to this incident.

Ulster Unionist Party’s North Down MLA Alan Chambers, said that the community in Bangor is in shock following Mr Shearer's death.

Mr Chambers said: “It was with immense sadness that I learned that the young man attacked in the Fernmore Drive area of Bangor some 10 days ago, has passed away in hospital.

“I live locally, and given the intense nature of the police and forensic enquiries around the crime scene it had always been apparent that this was a very serious incident.

“What started out as an attempted murder case has now become a murder inquiry and it is a huge tragedy that a young man has had his life taken from him in such a manner.

“There is genuine shock amongst the residents of what is a very settled and quiet part of Bangor and it is now more important than ever that anyone who has any information relating to this terrible crime, no matter how trivial, should contact the PSNI.

“My thoughts are with the young man who has died, and with his family and friends. I am sure that these will be sentiments shared by everyone in the area.

“This has been such a sad story on so many levels, in which a 25 year old man with a full life in front of him has had it snatched away.”
