Further charges in Brian Phelan murder investigation

Detectives investigating the murder of Brian Phelan have charged a 26-year-old woman with perverting the course of justice, assisting an offender and withholding information.

The woman is due to appear at Newry Magistrates Court on Wednesday March 10.

Mr Phelan, a 33-year-old father of two from Bessbrook, died in July 2018 after being stabbed on the Carrivekeeney Road, on the outskirts of Newry.

Daniel Carroll, of Edward Street in Portadown, Co Armagh has already been charged in connection with the murder and is currently in custody awaiting trial.

Speaking about the latest charge in connection with the murder, Detective Inspector Michael Hawthorne said: “Detectives remain committed to bringing all offenders, whether they are the principal offender or an ancillary, to justice for their crimes.

“I would like to reassure the public that where there is information to act on, we will, no matter what the passage of time”, he added.

As is normal procedure the charges will be reviewed by the Public Prosecution Service.
