A BELFAST rubbish collection company has called on people walking their pets to "pick up after their dogs" amid concerns about the implications for public health.

Divert, which provides litter removal for councils and private landowners, said it is alarmed by the 200 per cent increase in dog waste on the streets.

The company is calling on irresponsible owners to "pick up after their dogs".

"It is disgusting to see that some dog owners are failing to pick up after their pets, when it’s an offence and the waste can lead to serious illnesses," Mark Hall said

He said while walking the dog has become one of the few opportunities to get outside for some fresh air during the coronavirus pandemic, it has "come at a stinking, germ-ridden cost".

In extreme circumstances, contact with dog faeces can cause toxocariasis, an infection which can lead to dizziness, nausea, asthma, and in worse case scenarios, blindness, or seizures.

People who do not pick up after their dog may receive a £80 fixed penalty notice.

Mr Hall said, while walking a dog is important for both pets and owner as a form of exercise especially during the pandemic, people should be more responsible.

"Unfortunately, thanks to the thoughtless behaviour by a few individuals, dog owners are once again getting a bad reputation due to a massive increase in dog mess on the streets," he said.
