Police are investigating the "suspicious death" of a 32-year-old woman in Portadown, Co Armagh.

Her body was found at a house in Carrickdale Gardens off the Tandragee road yesterday morning.

A 50-year-old man has been arrested and taken to Musgrave Custody Suite for questioning. This afternoon police were granted an additional 36 hours to question him.

A post mortem examination will take place to determine the cause of death.

Local people say the woman originally came from Scotland.

PSNI Detective Chief Inspector Mark Gibson appealed for anyone with information to contact police.

"We believe that the deceased was in the area of Carrickdale Gardens in the company of a male at around 5pm on Monday 8 February. We would like to hear from anyone who was in the area from this time until the early hours of Tuesday morning or who has any other information."

SDLP Upper Bann MLA Dolores Kelly has expressed her condolences. The Policing Board member has urged anyone with information to come forward to police.

Dolores Kelly MLA said: “My thoughts and prayers are with the family of the woman who has tragically lost her life in the Tandragee Road area of Portadown. Police have arrested a man and I understand that they have established a line of inquiry.

“I want to put on record my thanks to the officers who are working with the family in these tragic circumstances."
