HOLLYWOOD star Jamie Dornan may have some competition for acting roles in the future after his father landed a cameo in a crime drama.

Jim Dornan, a retired obstetrician and gynaecologist, was asked to appear in the third series of ITV drama Marcella, which was shot in Belfast and stars Anna Friel.

Professor Dornan, who is father of Co-Down born star Jamie, who has starred in the Fifty Shades of Grey franchise of movies, has found a role in the well-loved TV drama.

In Marcella, the Northern Ireland man takes on the role of a deputy chief constable, appearing in the second episode, alongside Ray Panthaki, Eugene O'Hare and Orla Mullan.

Professor Dornan said the role came to him by "pure chance".

"I was dining with my cousin at General Merchants on the Newtownards Road about two years ago when the director asked his companion who I was because I was familiar-looking.

"He told her he'd like me for a wee cameo so that was that. I did have about two lines as well but they seem to have ended up on the cutting room floor."

However, it is not the first time the retired medic has appeared TV.

He has previously played a policeman on the BBC thriller drama The Fall, which also starred his son, Jamie and Gillian Anderson.
