Man charged with hoax bomb call remanded into custody over bail breach

A MAN charged with making a hoax bomb call to the Strand Road PSNI Station in Derry has been remanded into custody.

Emmet Gillen (38) of Clon Elagh in Derry was charged with making the hoax bomb call on January 11.

He was released on bail on January 14, arrested for a breach on January 15 and released again only to breach his bail again two days later.

A police officer told the court that the defendant called police to say he had been drinking all day and night in breach of the bail condition.

When police arrived Gillen refused to come downstairs and threw chairs and a DVD player at police.

Defence solicitor Paddy MacDermott said Gillen had a 'drink problem' and the case was unusual in that the defendant had contacted police himself.

Deputy District Judge Liam McStay remanded the accused into custody to appear again on February 11.
