A security alert was continuing in Co Fermanagh last night after reports a device had been left in the area.

Members of the public were asked to remain vigilant in the Wattlebridge Road area of Newtownbutler, which is near the border with Co Cavan.

In a statement, police said they were "investigating this report to establish an exact location of any such device".

No roads were closed as a result of the alert although people were urged not to approach anything suspicious.

"Members of the public living in, or travelling through the area are asked to be vigilant and not to touch any suspicious objects," a PSNI spokeswoman said.

Sinn Féin councillor Thomas O'Reilly said: "Any phone calls alleging that there is devices here or there is clearly not doing anything to aid society moving forward, particularly at the minute when people are under pressure and this is something that we don't want happening."

In August 2019 the Continuity IRA claimed responsibility for an attempt to kill members of the PSNI in the area.

In May last year two armed men were pictured patrolling a road in the area while shots were also fired in a local graveyard.
