THE thaw may have arrived yesterday but not before Northern Ireland recorded its coldest night for 10 years.

Temperatures fell to -10.5C in Katesbridge, Co Down on Friday night, as the cold snap brought frozen lakes and icy paths and roads.

The last time temperatures fell as low was during the 'big freeze' of 2010.

During December that year temperatures plummeted to -19C in Castlederg, Co Tyrone.

It is not unusual for both places to record Northern Ireland's lowest temperatures, according to the BBC.

They sit in a hollow where the cold air sinks, allowing temperatures to fall so low.

Meanwhile, the Met Office forecast for the rest of the week is for mainly dry weather with some sunshine and light winds.

Rain tomorrow night will clear later on Wednesday,

Drier, brighter weather will follow on Thursday with strong northwesterly winds.
