MR Justice Ian Huddleston has been appointed as President of the Historical Institutional Abuse Redress Board (HIA) following a judicial reshuffle'.

He has taken over the role from Mr Justice Adrian Colton who will take up the post of leading judicial review judge.

The vacancy left by Mr Justice Huddleston as Presiding Coroner will be filled by Mr Justice David McFarland.

Lord Chief Justice Sir Declan Morgan made the announcement as Mr Justice Paul Maguire was sworn in as a Lord Justice in Northern Ireland's Appeal Court in a ceremony at the Royal Courts of Justice yesterday.

Mr Justice Huddleston said he is "honoured" at the appointment and vowed to "continue with the excellent work of my colleague, Mr Justice Colton, to ensure that the victims of historical institutional abuse in Northern Ireland receive compensation they deserve as quickly as possible".

Mr Justice Colton, said was he was "privileged to have been responsible for establishing the HIA Redress Board" and acknowledged the work of staff, panel members, the Interim Advocate, victims' and survivors' groups, solicitors and the Public Records Office.

"It is with thanks to their work that, despite the difficulties presented by the Covid-19 pandemic, the scheme envisaged by Sir Anthony Hart is now operating to provide victims and survivors of historical institutional abuse the compensation to which they are entitled."
