THE PSNI has issued a warning about a new phishing text message scam which tells people they are eligible for the Covid-19 vaccine.

The scam text informs the recipient that they have been identified as being "eligible to apply for your vaccine".

A PSNI spokeswoman said the message links to a "convincing, but fake, NHS page which then asks for bank details".

"If you receive a text or email that asks you to click on a link or for you to provide information, such as your name, credit card or bank details, it's a likely to be a scam," she said.

"Scams can come in many forms and this one is just the latest attempt by fraudsters to exploit the pandemic for financial gain".

Police advised the public not to open attachments or links in emails from "numbers you don’t know".

In addition, people should not give out any personal information including bank details and passwords in response to an email, text or phone call without verifying the identity of the caller.

They are also advised to block any numbers they "find suspicious", keep an eye out for spelling mistakes in emails and messages and to always go to a website directly and not click on links.
