DUP MP Sammy Wilson has hit back on Twitter after being asked if he had breached Covid guidelines when he was spotted at a seaside town in Co Antrim.

The member of the public, who saw the East Antrim MP in Portrush, took to social media on Saturday to question whether the politician's journey had been essential.

The man wrote: "Isn't @eastantrimmp supposed to be self isolating after returning from London (tier 4)?

"I just walked past him on the Portrush East Strand.

"Would be curious to find out why he thought his trip to Portrush was essential".

Mr Wilson replied to the tweet by saying: "People who routinely cross the border for essential purposes are not subject to these requirements."

In November the DUP veteran was pictured not wearing his face mask correctly for the second time in days.

It was the latest mask controversy in which the veteran DUP MP has embroiled himself in recent months.

Two months earlier in September, he was pictured on the London Underground without a mask.

He also came in for criticism in July from members of his own party and people living with disabilities when he referred to masks as "muzzles" in a tweet about supporting local businesses.
