THERE have been calls for caution at a beauty spot between Belfast and Lisburn due to the number of visitors raising concerns over social distancing.

An increasing number of people have been visiting Lagan Towpath to walk along the picturesque stretch of river.

However, The Irish News has been contacted by visitors who said they were forced to turn back from a walk yesterday.

North Lisburn SDLP councillor Johnny McCarthy urged people to reconsider visiting the towpath area due to the high number of visitors, and said people must "be on the same page" when it comes to combatting coronavirus.

"It's completely understandable that people wish to get out and about in the limited number of daylight hours, but I would urge caution when considering places likely to be popular and therefore busy," he said.

"It's vital we remember the reasons behind the lockdown. The numbers from our health service are getting scary and people should exercise caution now more than ever."

Mr McCarthy said the issue would be raised with the PSNI's local neighbourhood policing team and Castlereagh and Lisburn City Council.

"Everyone must be on the same page in this crucial period of battling the virus, and I would ask people to avoid the Lagan Towpath if it's busy, and to always practise social distancing."
