Another 12 people have died after contracting Covid-19, according to the Department of Health.

It brings the total number of deaths recorded by the department to 1,166.

This number mainly covers hospital related deaths unlike the figures released by Nisra earlier today, which said 1,594 people had died in connection with coronavirus up until 11th December.

The Statistics and Research Agency said 86 deaths occurred here in the week from 5th-11th December.

NISRA uses information based on death certificates whereas the Department of Health only records people who die after testing positive for the virus.

In the past 24 hours, 510 new cases of Covid-19 have been recorded by the Department of Health.

In hospitals, 445 patients have tested positive for Covid-19 with 31 in intensive care beds and 26 on ventilators.

There are 82 care homes with confirmed outbreaks.

Bed occupancy in the north's hospitals stands at 102 per cent. Seven hospitals are operating beyond capacity.

The figures were released after the Stormont executive announced a strict six-week lockdown aimed at curbing the spread of the virus.

The lockdown is set to begin on Boxing Day.

Stormont's chief scientific adviser Professor Ian Young said today that had no action been agreed, Northern Ireland would have seen thousands of Covid-19 deaths.
