More than 400 vulnerable people around Belfast received hot meals on their door step yesterday to help them through the cold conditions of winter.

A team from The People's Kitchen, Belfast, formerly St Patrick's Soup Kitchen, came together at its new base at Farset on the Springfield Road in north Belfast, to cook the meals before they were delivered by volunteers.

Between 400 and 500 meals and desserts are being prepared and delivered around the city of Belfast every Wednesday in December as part of a new initiative `Don't go cold or hungry this winter', which is being spearheaded by The People's Kitchen, Belfast.

Paul McCusker, co-ordinator of The People's Kitchen, said "isolation and loneliness are major issues".

"We know that during winter, when people can't keep their homes warm, there is an increase in deaths," he said.

"This is for people who are lonely or isolating. One particular lady last week broke down because she hadn't spoken to anyone in four days".
