A further 11 people have died of coronavirus in Northern Ireland, new figures from the Department of Health show.

It takes the total number of Covid-19 fatalities in the north to 1,050, while 419 new cases of infection push the total confirmed infections to date to 55,047.

Figures also show that there are 413 patients in the north's hospitals being treated for Covid-19, with 30 patients in intensive care wards - 24 of whom are ventilated as part of their treatment.

There were no further coronavirus deaths reported in the Republic yesterday however, where to date 2,099 people are confirmed to have died as a result of infection.

There were 301 new cases of infection in the south, taking the overall confirmed infection total there to 73,948.

As of yesterday, there were 233 people being treated for the virus in southern hospitals, of which 28 were in intensive care unites.

Of the 28 in ICUs, 17 are currently on ventilators.

Co Donegal's Letterkenny University Hospital has the second highest number of Covid-19 patients in the Republic, behind St Luke's Hospital in Kilkenny with 31.

Across the UK yesterday a total of 231 deaths were announced, bringing the UK's confirmed death toll to 61,245.

Following another 17,272 fresh cases of infection, the UK's overall infection total since the outbreak began now stands at 1,723,242.

Yesterday's UK total marks a 42 per cent rise on the total for last Sunday, representing more than 5,000 cases.
