TWELVE more people with Covid-19 have died in Northern Ireland as official statistics show the number of registered deaths has risen for the sixth week in a row.

According to the Northern Ireland Statistics and Research Agency (Nisra) the region is experiencing similar numbers of fatalities to those reported in early May.

The Department of Health said its recorded death toll is now 913 - with Nisra putting its figure of deaths reached by November 13 significantly higher at 1,227.

Data from the latter gives a fuller picture of Covid-19 fatalities because the department's statistics focus primarily on hospital deaths and only include people who have tested positive for the virus.

Nisra obtains its data from death certificates in which Covid-19 is recorded as a factor by a medical professional, regardless of where the death took place.

The department said another 369 confirmed cases of the virus recorded in the last 24-hour reporting period, with a total of 49,085 people now testing positive since the pandemic began.

Of the 1,227 deaths recorded by Nisra by November 13, 715 (58.3 per cent) occurred in hospital, 423 (34.5 per cent) in care homes, nine (0.7 per cent) in hospices and 80 (6.5 per cent) at residential addresses or other locations.

The 432 deaths which occurred in care homes and hospices involved 105 separate establishments - with 102 more care home residents dying in hospital.

Deaths of care home residents now account for 42.8 per cent of all Covid-19-related deaths.

In the Republic, eight further Covid-19 linked deaths were reported, with the virus death toll rising to 2,018.

The National Public Health Emergency Team said there were 330 more confirmed cases recorded in the last 24-hour reporting period, with 283 coronavirus patients were in hospital, 33 of whom were in intensive care.
