THE funeral of the sister of Northern Ireland footballer Kyle Lafferty has been held in their home village in Co Fermanagh.

Sonia Lafferty (41), who lived in Belfast, died in hospital on Thursday following a battle with ill health.

Lafferty was among the mourners at her funeral in Kesh on Saturday after he is understood to have travelled back from Italy where he is currently playing for Serie B club Reggina.

The service took place in Ardess Parish Church, with only close family in attendance due to the current Covid-19 regulations.

Paying tribute to his sister, the former Rangers star spoke about how he had lost his "best friend".

"Sonia was my number one far and every day she said how proud I made her but all along I was the proud brother," he told the Sunday Life.

"Not only have I lost my sister, but a best friend."

The Irish Football Association also sent their "sincerest condolences" to the striker and his family.

The Lafferty family asked for donations, in lieu of flowers, for Pancreatic Cancer Awareness.
