SINN Féin has selected Nicola Brogan to replace Catherine Kelly as an MLA in West Tyrone.

Ms Kelly resigned her seat last weekend after it emerged she was a signatory on a Sinn Féin bank account into which £10,000 of emergency Covid-19 money had been incorrectly paid.

Four members of the party have so far resigned their posts, including Ms Kelly's husband Barry McColgan and Senator Elisha McCallion, after three separate payments intended to help struggling businesses were sent to party accounts but not promptly repaid.

From the Lislap area of Omagh, Ms Brogan is a graduate in politics and criminology.

After a spell working in Australia, she returned to the Co Tyrone town where she managed a health care practice.

Her selection will now go to the party’s Ard Chomhairle for ratification.

Ms Brogan said: "I look forward to serving the people of West Tyrone and working alongside my party colleagues from the area and across Ireland to make their voices heard.

"Many challenges lie ahead but we are in a decade of opportunity which will shape the future of this island. There is a part for everyone to play in that and I look forward to playing my part in standing up for workers and families and creating a new Ireland for all."
