A Co Down church has published a new book exploring the history of the ecclesiastical parish of Kilclief and Strangford.

The book, `Stella Maris Church 1820-2020', also looks at the building of the first Catholic church in Strangford 200 years ago.

Researched and written by local historian, Michael McConville, who lives in the village, the book covers the establishment of the parish in 1870 and also explores religion in the area from the time of St Patrick.

The parish came into being when then Bishop of Down & Connor, Patrick Dorrian carried out an extensive re-organisation of its boundaries.

The first Catholic church, dedicated to St Mary Star of the Sea (Stella Maris), was built in the village of Strangford in 1820 but was seriously damaged in an accidental fire in 1930.

The current church was opened in July 1932 and later underwent extensive renovations, reopening in 1999.

Nearby, in Kilclief village, the first Catholic church had opened in 1785.

It served the community until 1969 when it was found to be in need of serious repair and so, a decision was made to build a replacement.

The new St Malachy's church opened in 1971.

The book, which is edited by Jennifer O'Reilly, who is also from Strangford, also examines changes in the education system over the years in the parish as well as exploring the history of other churches in the area.

It also has dedicated chapters to Strangford and Kilclief parishioners over the years, the opening of a Shrine dedicated to Our Lady Star of the Sea in Strangford in June 1928, and the blessing of the Fatima Shrine dedicated to Fr Colm McGrady in Kilclief in 2015.

Also covered is the parish's parochial houses, the opening of Stella Maris hall in Strangford in 1926, which became a social hub for the parish, and religious societies and celebrations over the years, such as the `Rosary Rally' in 1954.

Michael McConville said the book provides a comprehensive overview of the history of the parish.

"What I tried to do with the book was to write it in such as way that it can be enjoyed by anyone," he said.

"The book covers a wide range of subjects related to the parish and I think people will enjoy learning how it changed and developed over the years.

"I really hope people also enjoy looking at the many photos which capture special moments in time within the parish of Kilclief and Strangford".

Further details about the book are available by contacting Strangford parish.
