THE death of a father-of-two on a border road at the weekend is the third tragedy for his family who have already lost his two brothers to illness.

Michael Kirk's body was found on Blaney Road outside Crossmaglen in south Armagh just after 5am on Sunday morning.

The factory worker, who is in his forties had suffered head injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene after being examined by emergency service.

Following appeals from the PSNI and politicians, a man handed himself into police on Sunday.

It was this morning announced that he has been released on bail pending further enquiries.

Detective Inspector Michael Winters said: "I am keen to trace the last movements of Michael on the night of Saturday 22 August and the early hours of Sunday 23 August. Did you see him in the town of Crossmaglen or walking along the Blaney Road?

"I would also like to trace the movements of a blue Audi 6. Did you see this vehicle at any time on Saturday 22 or Sunday 23 August, do you have any dashcam footage that could assist us with our enquiries?

"If you have information call us on the non-emergency number 101, and quote reference number 515 of 23/08/2020."

Originally from nearby Inniskeen in Co Monaghan, Mr Kirk was living in Co Cavan where he worked at Manor Farm chicken factory.

SDLP councillor Pete Byrne said he has "two young children" and his family will be devastated by his loss.

"The community is shocked because the Kirk family have had a devastating time. His younger brother died of leukaemia or a similar cancer when he was 19 or 20 and his second brother died of (a disease of) the nervous system".

"For that family it is one tragedy after the next."

The councillor said it was a dangerous road for pedestrians.

"He was walking out of the town and there are a few junctions on the road and a couple of hidden dips. If a car came out of that dip there would be no chance. Anyone walking there would be hit."

Sinn Féin councillor Aoife Finnegan said the Kirk family "are well known and respected throughout this area".

Friend and neighbour Tadgh Meegan described him as a gentleman and "a true friend of so many".

"Condolences to the Kirk Family and your two sons on this very tragic time," he wrote in on his Facebook page.

Another friend Pamela Chambers wrote her "heart is shattered".

"I'm going to miss that smile, the chats, the craic. I hope u knew we all loved you so very much in our little town of Shercock and we will never forget you."
