PETROL bombs were thrown at police during trouble in Co Armagh.

Officers were targeted during disturbances in the Levin Drive area of the Kilwilkie estate in Lurgan.

A bomb alert in the area was earlier declared an elaborate hoax after what police called a “suspicious device” was examined by the British army bomb squad.

Residents who had been removed from their homes at Tarry Drive were later allowed to return home.

Superintendent Wendy Middleton said: "Detectives from the PSNI Terrorism Investigation Unit (TIU) conducted planned searches in the Lurgan area today in relation to an ongoing investigation into violent dissident republican activity.

"A number of items were seized and taken away for forensic examination."

It is understood the searches were not part of the ongoing Operation Arbacia targeting the 'IRA'.
