PERSONAL items belonging to a priest who lived the last 40 years of his life with a bullet lodged in his head are to be auctioned for charity.

Canon Bernard Magee died aged 94 in July 2019.

Originally from the St Peter's parish in Belfast, he ministered in the city during the most violent years of the Troubles.

In 1974 he was seriously injured when a gunman opened fire on St Colmcille's Church in Ballyhackamore in east Belfast.

Canon Magee, who was standing talking to a friend at the time, was shot in the head and leg.

He survived and later had a titanium plate fitted to the top of his skull.

He spent the rest of his life with the bullet lodged in his head.

In 1981, he moved to Loughinisland in Co Down where he would serve as parish priest for almost two decades.

Canon Magee spent much of his retirement in Castlewellan.

Five lots of items belonging to the late cleric have now been put up for auction by ‘The Mission’ charity shop in the Co Down town.

The items include Canon Magee’s vintage pocket watch and a five-piece silver plated tea set.

The charity shop has asked that anyone interested in the items leave their name, contact details and offering bid with staff.

Some of the items can be viewed on the charity’s Facebook page (The Mission Shop Castlewellan).

The auction will close for bids at noon on Wednesday September 2.
