POLICE are investigating the sudden death of a man who was found collapsed on the roadside in south Armagh.

Sinn Féin councillor Barra Ó Muirí said the man had been seen in "an incoherent state wandering down the Keady line" in Crossmaglen on Thursday night prior to his death.

He was later found collapsed and later died.

Mr Ó Muirí said the death of the man, whose name had not been released last night, was "a deep cause of sadness".

"Residents contacted me late last night after they had witnessed a man in an incoherent state wandering down the Keady line," he said.

"I contacted the emergency services immediately.

"At the scene police and ambulance personnel found the man collapsed and tried to resuscitate him.

"Unfortunately he passed away.

"I must commend those good Samaritans who first raised their fears about the safety and well being of this man.

"The circumstances of this man's death are unclear and are being investigated. Local people are shocked and saddened and we offer our sympathies to the family of the deceased."

A PSNI spokeswoman last night said: "Police attended the sudden death of a man on the Keady Road in Crossmaglen (on Thursday).

"A post mortem will take place to establish the cause of death.

"There are no further details at this time."
