A swimmer has been airlifted to hospital after getting into difficulties off the Co Antrim Coast.

Coastguard rescue teams joined the RNLI in an operation yesterday evening after a swimmer was reported missing. The rescue operation took place near at Brown's Bay area of Islandmagee.

An RNLI spokesperson said: "Larne RNLI was requested to launch both lifeboats, the all-weather lifeboat and the in-shore lifeboat at 5.52pm following a report of a missing swimmer in Browns Bay area.

"The Coastguard helicopter from Prestwick was also tasked. The helicopter spotted a casualty in the water and alerted the all-weather lifeboat."

The spokesperson added: "The crew brought the casualty on-board the lifeboat and the casualty was subsequently airlifted to Antrim Area Hospital."

The condition of the rescued swimmer remains unknown.
