A MAN arrested in connection with the suspicious death of a 20-year-old woman was apprehended by police using a Taser.

The 23-year-old suspect was taken into custody after a stand-off.

Police carried out a search in Drumalane Park in Newry following a report that a young woman was found lifeless in a bath at approximately 8.30am on Sunday.

A post mortem is to be carried out.

The name of the woman has not yet been released.

Police said the investigation was at an early stage and officers were currently not looking for anyone else in connection with the death.

The arrested man is understood to have been living in the same house as the woman and his mother.

A neighbour, who wished to remain anonymous, said his young family had been left traumatised.

"We are all in shock, I just can't believe something like this could happen here," they said.

A large presence of police and an ambulance attended the cul de sac with residents throughout the area coming out on to the street as the PSNI knocked on their doors.

A short time later, detectives from Serious Crime Branch arrested the man nearby. There were reports that he had been `tasered'.

The man was placed in a white forensic suit and handcuffed at the scene by officers.

Honorary Polish Consul Jerome Mullen confirmed that the dead woman and arrested man were both from Poland.

"I was contacted in the morning about the deceased in order to make further contact with the family who are both Polish nationals," said Mr Mullen.

"This is a very tragic development in Newry and my condolences go out to the family of the deceased. This is a rare occurrence in the polish community in Newry and is something we have not seen since the murder of Marek Muszynski in 2009."

Independent Newry councillor Gavin Malone, who has family living in the area, was at the scene shortly after the body was discovered.

"The residents had been told by the police that they were searching for an individual in connection to the death," he said.

“I have spoken with the local residents and they are all saddened and in shock. This is a terribly tragic incident that has taken place in a quiet area of Newry. It is just heart-breaking."

Sinn Féin MP for Newry and Armagh Mickey Brady said the community was in shock.

"I want to express my condolences to the family, friends and loved ones of the woman who has died at this sad time," he said.

Newry and Armagh Alliance representative Jackie Coade also expressed her shock and sadness.
