Victims and survivors commissioner Judith Thompson has been told her contract will not be renewed.

It is understood the commissioner was told of the decision earlier this week.

Ms Thompson was appointed to the role in 2015 by former Stormont chiefs Peter Robinson and Martin McGuinness.

She was reappointed to the role for an extra 12 months last August after completing her first term.

Some of her time in office has been shrouded by controversy, particularly in relation to Troubles pensions.

Last year the commissioner said former paramilitaries would be eligible for the pension.

The British government later said that pensions will not be payable to those involved with paramilitary groups.

It is understood that Ms Thompson, a former probation officer, emailed members of the Victims and Survivors Forum yesterday to break the news of her pending departure.

It is believed she was contacted by a senior civil servant earlier this week and told that First Minister Arlene Foster and Deputy First Minister Michelle O'Neill had reached a decision that her appointment would end next month.

The Commission for Victims and Survivors did not comment.

The Executive Office did not respond when contacted.
